Restaurant in Cassino with traditional cuisine, revisited in a modern key

The fine cuisine of Poggio makes it one of the best known and loved restaurants in Cassino. The rich, and never incoherent menu offers the dishes of local tradition by using the delicacies of this region, such as the guaranteed quality Cannellino beans of Atina, the pecorino cheese of Picinisco, the chestnut honey of Terelle and the truffles of Campoli Appennino, revisiting them all in a modern key with the originality and culinary flair of Daniela, who has taken over management of the kitchen from her mother Vincenza; experience and innovation blended together harmonize the collaboration between mother and daughter in order to make every menu unique and traditional. The specialty of the restaurant is fish, which is always fresh, and every day it offers a selection of the catch of the day coming from the ports of Formia and Gaeta.

A peek at the restaurant’s menu

The menu starts with appetizers with homemade cold cuts, roast beef and sweet smoked pork, lightly smoked cooked ham, or prawn salad, which are followed by the most refined pasta dishes, such as gnocchi alla Santeliana, handmade gnocchi with tomatoes, salami and local cheese, with an enticing aroma and a delicious taste and presentation. After tasting the flavours of the earth, you must try our fish specialties, such as the orata in a chest with bread seasoned with herbs and artichokes or porcini mushrooms. If you wish to continue with the meat-based menus instead, the local baked beef steak with lard and plums is a perfect choice.

Fruit and homemade dessert selections from the restaurant

Lastly, the selection of fresh and exotic fruit, cut and delicately served or the homemade desserts are a must-have. Try the crunchy pastry with Chantilly cream and chocolate beans or the coffee, chocolate or hazelnut and honey semifreddo. All desserts are exclusively home made by the Chef. The restaurant in Sant’Elia Fiumerapido, near Cassino, is known for its particular attention and assortment of local products. For this reason, in addition to personally preparing cold cuts, bread, a selection of fresh pasta and desserts, the great majority of the ingredients are chosen among the best flavours in the area, making the Poggio di Casalucense one of the most well-known and esteemed restaurants in Cassino.

The wine list, the prestige of the restaurant

Every good meal must have its own wine, with a sharp or delicate taste, depending on the dish. The Poggio di Casalucense boasts a well-furnished wine cellar with an accurate selection of red and white wines, which come from various regions of Italy. Amongst the white wines we recommend the “classic” Chardonnay, Roero Arneis, Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, Uccellanda terre di Franciacorta and the Umbrian Cervaro della Sala. Amongst the red wines, instead, the Chianti, the Morellino di Scansano, the Brunello di Montalcino (Banfi), the Rubesco, the Rosso di Montalcino are favourites, as well as other local wines of Sant’Elia Fiumerapido, including the Merlot, produced by the “Tenuta la Creta” and the Cabernet di Atina, produced by the “Palombo” farm business, famous for having given the local Cabernet its Doc recognition.
